Shiny, Clean Solar Panels Work Better And Last Longer

Gutter Guard King Tas Solar Panel Cleaning

Solar panels are becoming more and more common on rooftops in Tasmania and throughout Society. That’s because more homeowners are investing in solar panels as a way to lower energy bills and reduce dependence on energy companies. People in Tasmania know that solar panels can save money while still being good for the environment. Though, without regular solar panel cleaning and maintenance, they will lose efficiency. While reports on energy lost due to dirty or compromised solar panels vary, everyone agrees that clean, unimpaired solar panels work better than solar panels covered in dust, grime, bird droppings, or mildew. After all, solar panels rely on sunlight to produce energy. Sleek, high-tech solar panels were designed to capture the optimal amount of light. But if part or all of your solar panels are obstructed with dirt, grime, mildew or algae, the efficiency of the solar panels can be reduced. In Tasmania, walls and driveways usually receive the same moisture and sunlight as your roof. So, if you see mildew or discolouration on your home’s exterior walls, walkways, or driveway, your solar panels may also be dirty or covered in mildew. That means it is time to call us for a professional solar panel clean.

Dirty Solar Panels Are Costing You Money!

If you have owned solar panels for at least six months, you are probably already experiencing decreases in their output.

Anything that prevents or restricts sunlight from entering the solar cells will reduce their capacity to perform at their maximum efficiency.

Salt, dirt, dust, grime, lichen, bird droppings and many other environmental pollutants can dramatically reduce the cell’s efficiency; so it’s very important that you establish and maintain a regular and effective solar panel cleaning program.

The more light that hits a panel, the more power it will generate. Due to the upwards angle of solar panels, they are more prone to bird droppings and a build-up of general dust and dirt that does not wash off with just rain. This reduces the amount of light hitting the panel and reduces its output. Solar panels are generally self-cleaning, but in particularly dry areas or where panel tilt is minimal, dust and other substances such as bird droppings can build up over time and impact on the amount electricity generated by a module.

Grime and bird poop doesn’t need to cover an entire panel to have an effect. This is where cleaning solar panels may have to be done. A good way to illustrate why rainwater will not clean solar panels is by looking at your car windscreen. If you didn’t clean your windscreen for 6 months, how much visibility would you lose? If left, the grime on your windscreen would accumulate and eventually ‘green’ over. Even if the car is rained on, the rain contains airborne dust particles that settle and attach to the surface after the rainwater evaporates. When we use our windscreen wipers, we clean the center of the screen, but where the wipers do not reach, there is a film of dirt. The whole of your solar panel is in exactly the same condition as the edge of your car windscreen because they are both exposed to the same elements. Visibility through your windscreen is lost due to the loss of light. Therefore, the same principles hold true for solar panel cleaning. It is very important to maximize the light getting into the solar panel and in turn, increase your financial reward.

Dirty vs Clean Solar Panels

  • Does dirt really affect my solar panel output? Photovoltaic solar systems have been thoroughly studied over the last 25 years, and the sizing and energy prediction tools have been validated with field studies. It has been found that the output of a photovoltaic solar panel array could decrease by over 30% over a period of months due to dirt build up on the coverplate. This is particularly so in dry climates where it may not rain for months at a time, dirt build up is a significant issue with respect to solar efficiency and power output.
  • How often should I have my solar panels cleaned? After an initial clean we recommend having your solar panels cleaned every 12 months, depending on the general level of pollutants your panels are exposed to (e.g. being close to high traffic roads etc). Like any glass surface, your solar panels are susceptible to chemical etching from the minerals and pollutants in water (i.e. hard water staining). Regular cleaning will keep your solar panels well maintained and efficient.
  • How long will it take? Depending on the size of the property the complete service can take anywhere from 1-3 hours. At the time of your quote we will give you an estimate of the timeframe involved and provide a written, fixed price quote.
  • What if it rains? Firstly, once glass is clean it takes quite some time before your it becomes dirty again, whether it rains or not, so rain will not spoil newly cleaned solar panels. However, climbing on ladders and roofs when it's raining is a safety hazard, so in the case of heavy rain or ongoing drizzle we will need to re-schedule your solar panel cleaning for a mutually convenient time.
  • What payment methods do you accept? We accept cash, cheque, bank transfer or credit card at the completion of the job.
  • Do you give quotes over the phone? More often then not we can determine an accurate quote for you by asking you a series of questions relating to the size and numbers of your panels, and by using Google Earth to get a view of your property without having to visit you in person.
  • How much does it cost to have my solar panels cleaned? Our prices are very competitive. Unless there are unusual circumstances we generally charge $150 which covers up to 10 panels for a single storey and $200 for a double storey. Then we charge $10 per panel for additional panels for single storey properties and $15 for double storey properties. So, if you had 15 panels on a single storey home the price would be $200 plus GST.

The job isn't done until you're seeing the promised results. We believe deeply in the quality of our work that if you're not happy with the results, you don't pay.
